“God loves Surfers!”

The monk’s words took me by surprise.

“Creation, man!”

Again, I was taken aback. Seeing my bewildered expression, the monk explained: “God loves people who enjoy His creation.” And, more intuitively than rationally, everything made sense.

I was at an Orthodox Christian monastery in the foothills of Mount Shasta—the last place I would have expected to hear such words. Yet, as funny and lighthearted as the monk’s statement seemed, I realized that they contained a deep, theological—and if I can say, existential—truth: God wants us to enjoy His creation, His gifts. Creation is His love language, and we are created to share in His love.

Surfers are those who enjoy God’s creation to the fullest; wrapped up in the ocean’s waves, sitting waiting for the next set, or paddling out, the surfer expresses his or her love for God by partaking of His gift—creation—with joy and gratitude.

God Love Surfers is a way to bring God-loving surfers together. Buy a t-shirt, spread the word, and most importantly, surf with God.
